As of mid-October, Ukraine’s energy system has been under attack, denying power to more than 30% of Ukraine throughout the country. Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko makes real the impact on Ukraine’s people and the economy – and how Ukraine seeks to rebuild and persevere. Ukrainian companies continue to produce gas. Ukraine still meets its obligations to transit Russian gas to Europe. Should Russia stop gas flows through Ukraine, it would deny gas to Moldova, Italy, Austria and Slovakia. Fuels have been saved to support agriculture – the risk is the ability to plant. At stake is Ukraine’s economy. The threat for Ukraine’s people is humanitarian, as winter looms.
